Kilgore’s Hours
Please bear in mind that Kilgore is run by just two guys. When one of us is in the shop, the other is usually out hunting for books. This means occasionally we might open a couple minutes late or close up for a couple minutes during the day to grab a quick lunch. Please don’t take offense, and bear with us. Our hours are:
Sunday : 11-6
Monday-Friday : 11-7
Saturday : 11-7
Do you guys buy books? How does that work?
We’re always happy to look at collections. We’re generally interested in offbeat fiction (beat, Vonnegut, Chuck Palhaniuk, etc.), philosophy, occult/metaphysics, science fiction, and independent comics, but we’re happy to check anything out.
We generally don’t buy textbooks, bestellers (Grisham, et. al.), or romance books.
We offer either store credit or cash for bookks. We generally offer ½ of what we’ll sell a book for in store credit, or ¼ in cash. So, if you have a book with a cover price of $16, we’ll likely sell it for $8, giving you $4 in store credit or $2 in cash.
Are you guys hiring?
Sadly, no. While we do hope to expand into a mighty Kilgore empire that will rule the universe, right now it’s really just Luke & Dan.
But I saw this one guy…..
Yah, in addition to being business partners, Dan and Luke are best pals. One challenge to working at the shop so dang much is they don’t get much of a chance to hang out together. So, every once in a while, they con one of their other pals into covering the shop. So, in theory, you could become friends with them, and it could lead to something beautiful when the universe-takeover plan begins.
Can you order a book for me?
Not really, unless it’s an indie comic/graphic novel. Since we’re 90% used, we have to wait until we find a copy of a book to stock it. That being said, we’re happy to keep our eyes out for particular books for our customers, so next time you come in, let us know what you’re after and if we find it, we’ll keep it for you.
Will you guys carry my zine/minicomic?
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Yes. Yes we will. Well, usually.
If your zine/mini is $5 or less, we’ll take 2-3 copies of it. We pay either 60% of cover, or 50% + shipping.
If you’ve got a book that’s $5-10, we’ll take one copy at the rates listed above.
If it’s more than $10, we consider that slightly different than a zine or minicomic, and we’d have to chat about carrying it.
It’s on the artist to keep up on restocking. We carry a lot of minis and it’s hard to chase folks down for more copies.
You guys publish stuff, right?
We do. We’ve published two issues of Noah Van Sciver’s popular ‘Blammo’ comic. Additionally, we recently bought a photocopies so zinester/comicsters can have cheap access for copying zines.
To use the copier (for comics or zines only, please), we ask the following. Bring your own paper, copy during the week, kick in a penny/copy to cover wear/tear to copies, and give us a few copies to sell.
It should go without saying, we reserve the right to say no.
In terms of bigger run publishing, we’re always happy to check your stuff out, bring (or send) it along to us, and if we’re able to it and believe in it, we’ll do what we can.
We should add here that what bowled us over with Noah wasn’t just content, but determination. That guy is ALWAYS working, ALWAYS drawing, and working to be a full time cartoonist. Good if you self publish some zines or minis, let us sell them for you, get to know us, etc. etc.
Our publishing ventures, while limited, are focused on helping cartoonists who need a little help getting over the hump between mini comic dom and Fantagraphics, D/Q, etc. etc.
Dan/Luke is ADORABLE. How can a lady/fella get some digits?
Sorry folks, these gentlemen are spoken for!
Dear Kilgore,
My buddy is a constant reader and frequent customer with a birthday just around the corner. Do you sell gift cards/certificates?
Heard Great Things About You,
Mike
Hey Mike —
Thanks for the note — we definitely do gift certificates. Come on in whenever you want, and we’ll make one up for you. They’re all unique and drawn by hand by either Luke or Dan, so they’re also one of a kind! Hope to see you soon.
